Little Neck Real Estate: Settled in the 17th century, the area was given this name (originally Little Madnan's Neck) to distinguish it from the larger peninsula to the east (Great Neck, formerly Madnan's Neck, in Nassau County). The area was a favorite spot of the Indians because of the abundance of clam shells which they used for wampum. Although pollution ended the clamming business in the early 20th century, the area's natural heritage is maintained in the Udall's Cove Wildlife Preserve. Residential areas feature upscale single-family homes; shopping is centered on Northern Boulevard.

Little Neck Real Estate:  In the 1860s, clam and oyster fishing was a big industry, employing thousands. Pollution, however, killed the industry in the early 1900s. The Little Neck train station opened in 1866 and the rail line was extended to Port Washington in 1898. That year, Queens County was annexed to New York City and Nassau County broke away, with the boundary set on Glenwood Street in Little Neck. As bridges and tunnels opened in the early 1900s, home developers promoted Little Neck with the not-quite-accurate slogan, ``Only 26 minutes from Manhattan.'' Little Neck went from an agricultural community to a city suburb. Claims to fame: William K. Vanderbilt Jr., whose estate straddled Little Neck and Lake Success, sponsored Vanderbilt Cup motor races starting in 1904. Bloodgood H. Cutter, the 19th Century ``Long Island farmer poet,'' also called Little Neck home. The most poignant landmark, the Indian burial site and a split boulder inscribed, ``Here rest the last of the Matinecoc,'' was moved from Northern Boulevard to the Zion Churchyard in Douglaston.
